Keukenhof, the best day out among the flowers! There are more than 7 million bulbs in bloom this spring, with a total of 800 varieties of tulips. A unique and unforgettable experience!

Besides the spacious 32 hectares of flowers, you can enjoy the spectacular flower shows, surprising inspirational gardens, unique artwork and wonderful events. Do not miss the Tulpomania exhibition in the Juliana Pavilion.

Keukenhof is also one big party for children. They will have a blast with the treasure hunt, petting farm, maze and the playground.

In 2018, Keukenhof’s theme will be Romance in Flowers. After all, the two are inextricably linked. The most beautiful spring park in the world with its sea of flowers will put you in a romantic, spring mood.

The historic park was designed midway through the Romantic period (1857) as an ornamental garden for Castle [Kasteel] Keukenhof. Since 1950, millions of tulips have flowered in the atmospheric garden around the pond with its gorgeous vistas and centuries-old beech trees. Many generations experienced joyous moments there. Propose to your loved ones in the romantic tulip garden or have a secret rendezvous in the Cupid Garden or the Love Paradise. Say it with flowers …. The flower shows will also have romance as their theme. The rose show will be bigger than ever: the red rose, the symbol of true love. In 2018, Keukenhof once again has a wonderful tulip mosaic planned featuring 50,000 bulbs.

The Keukenhof season will conclude with Romance at Keukenhof, a classical music festival that will take place amid the park’s tulips.

Hortus Bulborum

Hortus Bulborum

  • Event held from Friday, April 6, 2018 till Wednesday, May 16, 2018

The Hortus Bulborum is the only museum garden in the world where you can find over 4,000 different tulip, hyacinth, daffodil and other bulbous cultivars, species and varieties in bloom. Nowhere on this globe you will find such a fine selection of old bulbs in one place. Every spring the Hortus transforms into a treasure trove full of dazzling colours, beautiful shapes and overwhelming fragrances at the foot of the picturesque, parish church in Limmen village, near the historic city of Alkmaar.

The collection boasts tulips dating from 1595, the famous ‘Duc van Tol Red and Yellow’; the oldest known cultivar and dozens of other cultivars which were prizes possession as far as back as the Golden Age. But also 17th century daffodils. The most antique daffodils are said to come from around 1601, like ‘Double Campernelle’ and ‘Albus Plenus Odoratus’. Though the Narcissus pseudonarcissus, also known as the 'Lent Lilly', was already found in English gardens in the 1200s. While the oldest fritillary was already described for the first time in 1577, Fritillaria imperialis ‘Prolifera’. And what to think of fragrant double-flowered hyacinths from the 1800s and crocuses.

Fundamental in this garden, however, is the preservation of heirloom bulbs. Many of them have no commercial value for modern mass production whatsoever. The aim is to maintain these cultivars and safeguard them for the future generations. The preservation work of the Hortus Bulborum goes hand in hand with the work of the professional growers to obtain better cultivars for today’s needs. The collection is a second to none pollen bank in the world to the bulb growing sector.

The current collection contains over 2,600 cultivars of tulips (species and varieties), some 130 hyacinths, around 1,100 daffodils, some 110 crocuses and a few dozen of fritillaries.

The Hortus Bulborum is worth a visit, especially for garden lovers and all those who love rare, heirloom and florist bulbs.

Bloemencorso Bollenstreek

Bloemencorso Bollenstreek

  • Event held from Wednesday, April 18, 2018 till Sunday, April 22, 2018

Theme 2018: Culture

From April 18, 2018 up to and including April 22, 2018 is Corsoweek, Flower Parade Week, in the Bollenstreek, the bulb growing area. The parade floats will be decorated in the hall van DeLeeuw Flowerbulbs in Sassenheim from Wednesday, April 18 up to and including Friday, April 20.

On Friday evening the illuminated Flower Parade will travel through Noordwijkerhout.

At 9.30am on Saturday April 21 the Flower Parade will depart from the Wilhelminaboulevard in Noordwijk on its way to Haarlem. The parade will pass by Keukenhof just as it did last year.

At around 21.30 hrs the illuminated parade will arrive at the centre of Haarlem. On Sunday April 22 all the parade floats will be on display at the Gedempte Oude Gracht/Nassaulaan.

Apart from the Flower Parade of the Bollenstreek being the only event of this calibre that occurs in the springtime, it is the only parade that is constructed and composed of bulb flowers such as hyacinths, tulips and daffodils. It is for this reason that this Flower Parade of the Bollenstreek is known as the face of spring, as no other parade can come close to the unique spring colours and perfumes that surround this one.

The procession consists of about twenty floats and over forty luxurious and special vehicles richly decorated with flowers. For an extra festive character the procession will be accompanied by several bands. There is plenty of room along the whole route for thousands of visitors.

Dutch Lily Days

Dutch Lily Days

  • Event held from Tuesday, June 5, 2018 till Friday, June 8, 2018

Seventh Dutch Lily Days builds on the internationally successful concept

From Tuesday to Friday, June 5 – 8, the international horticultural sector is again welcome to visit nurseries, breeders and exporters of lilies. It’s time for the seventh Dutch Lily Days. The event has acquired a permanent place on the horticultural calendar. This year 14 companies will be opening their doors. The official opening is being held at Zabo Plant.

The formula of the Dutch Lily Days has remained unchanged over the years: companies active in lily cultivation or trade open their doors at the same time. That in the past few years it has been taking place just before the Flower Trials has boosted interest in the event. ‘The Dutch Lily Days have achieved a lot,’ confirmed Paul van Egdom, co-owner of Lily Company, one of the 14 participating companies. ‘Certainly for foreign visitors it is very attractive that they can get a good idea of the situation in just four days. It’s so easy to visit the participating companies that it encourages many visitors to come.’

‘We strengthen each other’
Van Egdom also ascertained that the collaboration involved in the Dutch Lily Days has already led to cross-fertilisation. ‘Look at our company. We share the greenhouse with Bot Flowerbulbs. We notice that their forcing customers also visit our facilities and vice versa. We strengthen each other. For example, we don’t export to Japan, but we have recently started working again with De Jong Lelies and Onings Holland to achieve this.’

Participating companies
The Dutch Lily Days are organised for colleagues from around the world. From Tuesday to Friday, June 5 – 8, they can visit: P. Aker Flowerbulbs, Van den Bos Flowerbulbs, Bot Flowerbulbs, De Jong Lelies, Lily Company, Mak Breeding, Onings Holland, C. Steenvoorden, GAV Lilies, Gebr. Vletter & Den Haan, VWS Flowerbulbs, World Breeding, Zabo Plant and Royal van Zanten. More information is available at: www.dutchlilydays.com.
